We went from big gold chains and Addidas, oversized hoodies, skate sneaks and back packs to the classic man. Jidenna – Classic Man ft. Roman GianArthur shows a new look for popular music in black culture. There is many parts of this video I love and yea the song has a great vibe that will have you nodding to it, but the image that it betrays is beyond right on. Black men styling it on the street, hitting up a barbershop and getting younger men out of trouble with the law are a few concepts found within the video. Not only does Jidenna get the younger men out of trouble but he takes them from cuffs to education as well.
I really like the barbershop scene (y’all didn’t see that one coming did y’all?), because in the early years of Barbering, all the barbershops were ran by men of color. In the world today, the old school barber style is mostly in the white community. Nothing wrong with this because just like music, barbering sees no color. It’s just nice to see black culture taking on the look of the old school barber style.
With an image that is shown on TV of black culture everyday being not so appealing, it is great to see another image being expressed. An image of unity, respect and class. This video shows black culture in the image we have been waiting for and much respect to it. I really like this video, I would love to see more of this coming out of our music industry. Check it out and leave your thoughts in the comments.
